PADUCAH — Many across the region are bracing for low temperatures and snow headed to the area this Friday. The threat of possible 4 to 6 inches of snow in the Paducah area has prompted local emergency crews to continue planning ahead.
Paducah Fire Department Chief Steve Kyle highlighted that in weather like this, planning ahead is crucial. It’s evaluating the conditions that allows him and his team to successfully gauge their resources and handle all situation swiftly and safely.
“We respond to EMS calls all the time, but we deploy smaller vehicles that are more maneuverable and easier to respond with during these types of events, to keep the bigger trucks off the road until they have to get out,” said Kyle.
When there is this amount of snow coming to the area, Kyle cited traffic related calls as the most frequent. The uptick in traffic wrecks and slide-offs is why the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has worked diligently for the past two days to treat all state roads.
“During snow events, I think we see more traffic related, just a difference in what people select to get out in with ice. People tend to stay home more,” Kyle said.
KYTC Public Information Officer Carrie Dillard explained that treating the roads is not just a one day process. She said treating the roads this time took two days.
“Free treating with brine gives our crews a head start on any snow and ice event. The brine, once it’s sprayed on the pavement, dries to a fine powder, which becomes activated during the first falling snow. That chemical reaction then keeps the snow from bonding with the pavement, allowing it to be plowed more, easier,” she said.
Both Dillard and Kyle stressed the importance of the average person being prepared as we expect snow. It’s important, if you absolutely need to get out on the road to keep supplies handy in case of an emergency.
Some items to think about keeping nearby are blankets, first aid kits and hand warmers. It’s also a good idea to keep your phone charged and a full tank of gas in your car.
