MARSHALL COUNTY, KY—Following this week’s snowfall, Franklin’s Funny Farm, the home base of Makin’ Memories LLC, a horse-riding business, is looking forward to spring as it deals with the impacts of the cold weather.
Owner Melissa Franklin said the farm stocked up on supplies before the snowfall. The farm also has a de-icer in their water trough, which is helpful with the low temperatures.
Still, Franklin said the weather is difficult.
“Honestly, it can be a hassle. It can be a really big chore; but I love it. You know, and I wouldn’t- I wouldn’t have it any other way… You have to make sure their area… you have to make sure it’s ready to go,” said Franklin.
The farm is home to four horses, including two miniatures. During warmer weather, the business offers pony, horse, and buggy rides.
As Franklin grows her business, she plans to start hosting events on the farm. Her goal is to help families connect as they spend time together.
“I’m hoping this spring will be my first time booking somebody and having them out to the farm… and just see if it’ll take off… I’ve got different activities that the parents and the kids could spend together and just take that time,” said Franklin.
Franklin said running a small business like hers is challenging but worth it.
“It’s hard. Learning a lot, you know, with the business and everything, so since I am starting out, I’ve just got to take baby steps. I’ve-I’ve been in it like- this is going to be my second year, and just to see the kids smile, you know, they dress up as a cowboy or cowgirl,” said Franklin.
She referenced an event held in December that drew dozens of children.
“The kids just loved it, you know, the weather was really bad or going to get bad, and I still had 35 kids come out and participate and ride, you know, so that was just- that just tickled my heart,” said Franklin.
