So what if deserts and jungles are the two hottest biomes on Earth? Put them together, and you get a treat equal parts cold and creamy, at least in Maricopa. And, hey, desert is only a letter off from dessert.
Yogurt Jungle topped eight other cold dessert shops for the crown as Maricopa’s favorite frozen treat stop in an InMaricopa survey of 873 readers that ended Friday.
The froyo spot known for its massive toppings bar accounted for nearly one-third of the votes.
Yogurt Jungle employees believed creative license is what draws most people to the shop.
“I think being able to be creative with your food is so exciting for the kids,” said employee Moshe Evans, a Glennwilde resident.
His co-worker Emily Turik said that went for the adults too.
“We have a bunch of different varieties, like dairy-free, sugar-free. We have something really for everybody and every diet,” she said.
The froyo shop beat other local favorites, like new arrival Cold Stone Creamery and mainstay Water & Ice, the runners-up with one-fifth of the votes each.
The soon-to-be-opened Baskin-Robbins took fourth place with 8% of votes. In fifth was Bahama Buck’s with 5%.
Yogurt Jungle sold its first scoops of frozen yogurt on St. Patrick’s Day in 2011. It was sold to a new owner in 2015. You’d think longevity is a winning strategy for such dessert shops, seeing how Nekter Juice Bar, which opened a year ago, came in dead last with less than 2%, and the upcoming La Michoacana finished with just 4%.
But you’d be wrong. Maricopa’s Dairy Queen — the only ice cream parlor that opened in a year starting with “19” — finished seventh of eight with a melty 3%.
