As the chief of staff and senior vice president for strategic initiatives at Georgia Institute of Technology since 2024, he has leveraged over four decades of experience to synchronize the efforts of the president’s cabinet within the university, driving strategic plans that lead to excellence and achieving institutional goals. Dr. Johnson’s role involves direct reporting to the president and coordinating with various deans, vice presidents and other key figures within the university and the University System of Georgia.

Affiliated with Georgia Tech for over a decade, Dr. Johnson began his career on campus as a managing director of the Tennenbaum Institute and professor of practice. Subsequently, he became an industrial and systems engineering professor from 2013 to 2024. He has been a faculty leadership fellow since 2014 and a diversity and inclusion fellow since 2017.

Besides his work in the education sector, Dr. Johnson became a director at EMCOR Group Inc. in 2021, where he continues to contribute his expertise. He previously served on various professional boards for organizations like Engineering Systems Inc., American College Testing and Mission: Readiness.

Among other notable roles, Dr. Johnson served as a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army for the State of Georgia from 2017 to 2020, demonstrating his commitment to public service. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant professor in the department of mathematics at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point between 1985 and 1988.

Dr. Johnson’s military service was marked by significant leadership roles, including deputy commanding general and deputy chief of engineers for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 2005 to 2008. He previously directed the Installation Management Agency for the U.S. Army from 2004 to 2005 and was the commanding general of the Gulf Region Division during the pivotal $18.4 Billion reconstruction effort in Iraq between 2003 and 2004.

Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Johnson achieved a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and mechanical engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1976, a master’s degree in operations research and industrial engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1985, and a Doctor of Education in higher education administration from the University of Georgia in 2023. He also completed several executive programs, including a national security program at The George Washington University and another in sustainability engineering at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Johnson’s involvement with civic-minded organizations included serving as trustee emeritus for Georgia Technology Foundation Inc., and his dedication extends to mentoring younger generations through organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He is also a former senior vice president for referee operations at the National Basketball Association. A well-received author, Dr. Johnson has contributed publications that have addressed various critical issues, such as academic experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic shift to online learning.

Dr. Johnson’s professional journey has been complemented by numerous awards and honors, such as the Black Engineer of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and the Black Engineer of the Year for 2025.
