With over a decade of experience in his current role, he oversees research and development, designs projects, participates in licensing patents, and passionately coaches his team. Dr. Kularatne’s expertise lies in developing drugs for cancer using small molecules or antibody-targeted drug conjugates.

Dr. Kularatne’s journey at On Target Laboratories LLC began in 2012 as the vice president of research and development. Since then, his influence has been instrumental in the company’s continuous advancement. Established in 2010, the company is committed to eradicating cancer by developing technologies that empower surgeons to remove more cancer during surgery.

Before joining the organization, Dr. Kularatne was a consultant for PhaseRx in 2010. He also collaborated with Merck from 2007 to 2009 and was a visiting scientist at Endocyte Inc. between 2006 and 2009.

Driven by personal experiences, Dr. Kularatne’s dedication to cancer research is deeply rooted in his family’s history. His grandfather’s passing from cancer when he was an infant inspired him to pursue a career focused on developing cancer treatments. Dr. Kularatne’s work has led to developing three Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs and eight drug candidates currently undergoing human clinical trials. He has also secured over 250 patents, has authored over 100 scientific publications that disseminate his research, and has been invited to be a peer reviewer for multiple scientific journals.

Dr. Kularatne’s academic journey is a testament to his significant achievements, which have paved the way for his professional triumphs. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 2000, a master’s degree in 2004, and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic and medicinal chemistry in 2009, all from Purdue University. He further refined his skills as a postdoctoral fellow in the Peter G. Schultz laboratory at The Scripps Research Institute in 2012. Dr. Kularatne attributes his success to a robust knowledge base.

In addition to his extensive educational accomplishments, Dr. Kularatne is actively involved in various industry-related organizations. He serves on the board of directors for TCG Green, Crozone Pharmaceutical Clinic for Life Science, and Asta and Dante Therapeutics.

Dr. Kularatne’s commitment to giving back extends beyond his professional endeavors. He established a foundation in Sri Lanka to support impoverished children and founded AST Kids and Elders, reflecting his dedication to humanitarian efforts. These initiatives have significantly impacted Dr. Kularatne’s community and his professional success.

In light of his contributions to the field, Dr. Kularatne has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Outstanding Young Scientist Award in Drug Discovery Sciences at the Global PHT Expo and Summit in 2023 and multiple SBIR Grant Awards for non-small cell lung cancer research.
