Ms. Arthur is an experienced mental health chaplain dedicated to catering to the needs of veterans at the Veterans Administration Medical Center since 2009. As part of her daily responsibilities, she specializes in marriage counseling, providing group and one-on-one counseling sessions primarily to veterans and their spouses or partners. Additionally, Ms. Arthur assists veterans with other mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and moral injury, counsels men and women who have experienced military sexual trauma, and manages support groups for those coping with grief and loss.
Besides her paid position, Ms. Arthur has dedicated her free time to volunteering at a homeless shelter in Warner Robins, Georgia, for the past three years, helping homeless female veterans. She has also been active with the Making Change Program at Harvard Divinity School, a part of the institution’s executive education theories. During her youth, Ms. Arthur was involved with the Presbyterian Church, playing a critical role in developing the Youth Triennium, a program still active today.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Arthur plans to transition away from mental health therapy to pursue a full-time career in education to teach courses in ethics. Before working in mental health and chaplaincy, she notably spent over 20 years in the computer industry.
In preparation for her career, Ms. Arthur received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and women’s studies at Temple University and a Master of Divinity in theology and ethics from Boston University. Additionally, she received certification in mental health integration with chaplain services from the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. During her time at the seminary, Ms. Arthur notably participated in the National Capital Semester for Seminarians, a program in Washington, D.C., that offers seminarians interested in politics, government, and lobbying the opportunity to work locally.
