Mr. Donnelly has established a distinguished career as a business executive with a keen focus on problem-solving and fostering team collaboration. In all of the organizations he has been associated with until his retirement, he applied his extensive experience to guide companies through critical turnarounds and startups and later as an active outside member of corporate boards of directors.
Mr. Donnelly began his career in 1959 at Honeywell as an accountant before joining Graco USA in 1965. Over the next decade, he held several key positions with the global manufacturer, including sales manager of the international division and chief operating officer of the Japanese Joint Venture. He was later appointed vice president of all international operations and finally was made chief operating officer of North American operations headquartered in Minneapolis, MN. During his tenure with Graco USA, Mr. Donnelly’s leadership contributed to the company’s growth from $5 million to over $100 million by 1975.
Beginning in 1975, Mr. Donnelly personally executed the turnaround of new ventures in the Boston area. These included a restaurant chain of 50+ units and two high-tech start-ups where he was brought in by the founding investors. In 1985, he joined the Marshall Financial Group as the partner responsible for the turnaround management program.
Mr. Donnelly’s professional journey is marked by many significant achievements. One of these, the acquisition of Fog Autolube in the late 1960s was pivotal in his career. At that time, he managed Graco’s international operations and successfully negotiated with Fog Autolube’s founder to purchase the company. This was considered a remarkable feat, considering Fog Autolube’s $8 million stature against Graco’s total annual revenue of $25 million.
Apart from his full-time career endeavors, Mr. Donnelly found success owning several businesses, including FMH Company and FPD Company. He also consulted for various organizations, providing his expertise in turnarounds and start-ups between 1975 and 1998, and was active on several boards. Moreover, Mr. Donnelly had the opportunity to work at his alma mater, Dartmouth College, as an assistant varsity football coach.
Mr. Donnelly served his country as an enlisted man in the U.S. Army, beginning in 1959. In light of his contributions to his country, Mr. Donnelly received a Commendation Award for Service Above and Beyond the Call of Duty from the U.S. Army in 1962. Since then, he has served on several local boards including Minnesota Outward Bound, and volunteered as a vestry member at his parish, Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
The foundation of Mr. Donnelly’s success can be traced back to his academic achievements at Dartmouth College, where he was a varsity collegiate football player, earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and Russian history, magna cum laude in 1957, and a Master of Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business in 1958. He was also elected into the Phi Beta Kappa Society. During those very influential years, Mr. Donnelly learned the importance of hard work and resilience, qualities instilled in him by the offensive line coach at the time, Jack Musick.
