MONROE — The Monroe Family YMCA is planning a week-long 70th-anniversary celebration for October. Its staff seeks Y memorabilia from the last seven decades.
The Monroe Family YMCA was incorporated by local residents Earl C. Kull, Grattan Gray, Vernon E. Clark, Dwight H. Montz and Robert C. Etnire. Its first location was 32 Washington Street in Monroe.
“We are one of the older Ys in Michigan. We are an independent Y, not an association like Detroit,” said Lizzy Stritt, the Y’s community relations director.
Stritt is leading the effort to collect Monroe Family YMCA memorialia. The Y wants to borrow anything people have related to the facility and its programs: Shirts with old logos, photos, trophies, vintage programs and other keepsakes.

“There are not certain things we are looking for, but anything that can show the Y throughout the years,” Stritt said. “People can contact me, and I can make sure items are put somewhere safe until that week. I plan on giving them back the following week.”
This historic poster and patch are some of the items from Monroe Family YMCA’s history. The organization seeks more items and photos from its 70-year history.
Stritt may put some of the items on display.

“I am imagining putting things out throughout the Y to help showcase our history,” she said. “We are in the early stages of what will be happening that week, but we will have stuff on social media at least 70 days out from the event week to help promote,” Stritt said.
