MAUMELLE, Ark. – Arkansas is showing no matter how old you get, a snowball fight still sounds like fun.

Even before Maumelle saw nine inches of snow, adults in the community planned a snowball fight for Friday morning. North Little Rock, Conway, Russellville, Jacksonville, and Hot Springs also discussed online holding their own adult snowball fights. Maumelle, however, looks to have proposed it first, and it might have hosted the biggest.

When Shelbi Peterson posted on social media “Adult Snowball Fight” Thursday over a thousand people liked the post, but she was unsure how many would show up.

“Honestly this started out as a joke, and now it literally took off, and it’s taken a life a life of its own We are in a warzone y’all,” she said while being pelted with snowballs.

Peterson was one of about 100 people in the field next to Maumelle’s Kroger. Even though the rules of the post said no kids, it didn’t stop them from joining in. Youngster Oliver Porterfield was one of them.

“So far I’ve hit like ten or eight…I think it should be made for adults, but sometimes kids like to come here should be out here too because kids do like snowball fights,” Porterfield said.

Brian Fortney was one of the first to arrive at the 11 a.m. shootout. He came with two tubs of snowballs already made in his truck bed.

“I felt like a little kid again. The snow is fun, man. We only get it so often so why not have fun while we have it?” Fortney said.

Most people in the fight did not know their allies or enemies before they showed up.

“A lot of us are still strangers. Ouch, but it’s okay. It is okay,” Maumelle resident Mars Pope said as he was hit with a snowball in the back of the head.

Even when hit in the head or face, participants said it is all in the spirit of fun.

“It’s not to minimize or diminish what the rest of the country is going through, but there’s no better time to just stop and for lack of better words just throw a snowball,” Peterson concluded.
