A Wisconsin woman is suing a property owner and a Grand Strand resort after allegedly suffering bed bug bites during a summer stay.
Milwaukee County resident Pamela Hullum was repeatedly bitten by bed bugs while staying at Grand Palms Resort on vacation in Myrtle Beach in May, resulting in physical injuries and psychological trauma, the personal injury lawsuit says.
According to its website, Grand Palms Resort offers hotel rooms and condominiums. Although Grand Palms Resort’s principal address is 1250 U.S. Highway 17 N. in Surfside Beach, Hullum was staying in unit C2 at 233 Presidential Drive in Myrtle Beach, the complaint says.
The unit is operated and maintained by the owner, whose identity is unknown, and Plantation Resort Villas IV, doing business as Grand Palms Resort, according to the complaint filed in Horry County’s Court of Common Pleas Wednesday. Both the company and the property owner are listed as defendants.
In addition to the bites she sustained, Hullum found visible signs of an infestation on the bed, including bed bugs and black excrement stains, the suit alleges.
The complaint says Grand Palms Resort and the unit owner were informed about the bed bugs, and their housekeeping and pest control confirmed the bugs’ presence.
As a result of the defendants’ negligence, Hullum suffered emotional distress, permanent scarring and loss of enjoyment, according to the lawsuit. Other damages include medical expenses and costs to clean and replace her infested property.
The lawsuit doesn’t list a monetary number, but Hullum is seeking compensation for costs, actual damages and punitive damages, “that may be just and proper under the circumstances.”
Grand Palms Resort didn’t immediately respond to The Sun News’ request for comment.
