The man suspected of driving a pickup truck into a New Orleans crowd on New Year’s Day was recently in financial trouble amid his divorce proceedings, according to NBC News. According to public records obtained by NBC, 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar emailed his then-wife’s attorney in January 2022, pressing to speed up the divorce process: “Time is of the essence. I can not afford the house payment. It is past due in excess of $27,000 and in danger of foreclosure if we delay settling the divorce.”He continued to say that the business he formed before their marriage, Blue Meadow Properties LLC, had a loss of $28,019.54 in 2021, making it worth around -$140,000. He added that he had incurred $16,000 in credit card debt primarily due to attorney’s fees, establishing a second residence, and his then-wife’s purchases over three months, according to public records.According to a financial information statement filed in August 2022, Jabbar made $57.69 an hour at Deloitte and worked 40 hours a week, taking home a net income of $7,876.70 a month after deductions. He listed “necessary” monthly expenses that totaled nearly $7,000 a month and stated that he owed to $41,867.19 to credit card companies and debtors. At least 14 people were killed and 35 were injured when officials say Jabbar drove a truck into the Bourbon Street crowds.The FBI confirmed that despite previous reports, investigators believe Jabbar acted alone in the attack.Jabbar said he joined ISIS before the summer and had originally planned to kill his family. According to the FBI, Jabbar felt that killing his family “would not focus on the war between the believers and disbelievers.” The FBI says after hitting the crowd, he got out of the car and began firing at law enforcement. Shots were returned by law enforcement, and Jabbar was killed at the scene.
