NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – If you see a man running without his shirt this winter, you might think he’s crazy. He’s not.
His name is Bo Marchionte. Why does he run without a shirt? He’s comfortable and prefers the cold over the heat.
Marchionte runs every day, and his streak of running is one of the longest in the world.
“I just love the freedom. I love the outdoors. I love the fresh air on my skin,” he said.
The shirtless part is new within the last two years. Marchionte has been lacing up his Asics and running for 9,867 straight days. The streak started January 4, 1998, as Cal Ripken was extending baseball’s consecutive games streak.
“Kind of gave me the idea that, hey, you know, maybe I could start running every day, and we’ll kind of see how far it takes us,” Marchionte said.
It has taken Marchionte on an incredible journey for 27 years, his feet pounding the pavement. He usually runs 7 to 10 miles a day.
“I love it. I do. I love it. Obviously, I haven’t missed a day, but three miles is the bare minimum,” he said.
Streak Runners International says the longest current streak belongs to a man from Utah who has run over 20,000 consecutive days — that’s 55 years. Marchionte is 79th on the list.
“I’m content staying 79th and continuing my own journey. Because, you know, once you move up on that list, that means somebody else’s kind of journey stops, so that’s it. I’m content at 79 but not missing any days,” Marhcionte said.
Marchionte wants to run somewhere fun for his 10,000th consecutive day of running on May 21. It’s a milestone he’s anxious to cross. Running is his journey, the destination is adding a new adventure every day until the streak stops.
“It’s something I truly love to do. So you know the day will come. And you know when that day comes, hopefully, I’m at peace with it,” he said.
Marchionte ran for over an hour Wednesday. He did have an injury last year that almost ended the streak.
