NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A flyer was sent out to multiple residents in North Little Rock less than 2 weeks ago stating that the NLR Planning Commission would soon be voting on a possible slaughterhouse.
The facility would be located at 1600 Gregory, and less than 5 minutes away homeowners like Talesha Dokes are developing opinions on the subject.
“It’s going to definitely make a difference and an impact in the area,” Dokes said.
Dokes says she’s been knocking on doors to let neighbors know to voice their concerns to the planning commission.
“It’s not a high-value property area but we would like to keep the value we do have,” Dokes said.
The slaughterhouse would slaughter over 2,000 cattle per year, and the smell and sound of animals could damage the value of properties in the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, some people like Michele Michalek, are looking at this as a win, saying it could be good for the economy while bringing in more jobs.
“This will create jobs, hopefully, more local meat will be available, it’s a lot of positives here” Michalek stated in a recent social media post.
But Dokes says she’s done research and knows it won’t be good for those who live close.
“The health concerns that residents face around these areas over the long term can be very detrimental to the residents,” Dokes said.
The final vote is set to take place with the Planning Commission on January 14.
