NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – In the beginning of January many in North Little Rock received a letter about a possible slaughterhouse coming to their neighborhood.
The planning was set to vote on it immediately after, but things came to a halt when residents begin voicing their concerns about what the neighborhood would become after the slaughterhouse was built.
Worries about the smell and their property values became a focus. And it still is for those who attended Thursday night’s town hall meeting, like Kristina Gulley.
“A business such a slaughterhouse should be in an area where you’re away from residents,” Gulley said.
The backlash from her and others all went to the owner of David’s Burgers, David Bubbus Jr., the man behind brining the possible slaughterhouse and farm if approved.
“My father’s name is David, I am David Allen, and I am tired of my father’s name getting drug through the mud” Bubbus said.
He was hoping to get the North Little Rock Planning Commission to vote yes to the slaughterhouse, but the community refuses to back him.
“There is an environmental impact and it’s bad, and it’s also put in black neighborhoods” one speaker during the meeting said.
And despite trying to reason with those attending Thursday night’s meeting, he’s now unsure about the outcome and has prepared to look for another location to build.
“Our plan was to do this and to do this so well that you guys never knew about it” Bubbus said.
“If the community or city doesn’t want it, we will go somewhere else, but we really believe we could have done a great job in this location” Bubbus said.
The next city council meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday.
