YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Next week’s arctic blast will be the coldest of the season, and its origin will send a shiver down your spine.
Let’s talk about Norilsk, Russia. It’s a city with a population of over 180,000 people in northern Russia. It is located inside the Arctic Circle in Siberia where the average January high temperature is -10°F and the average low temperature is -23°F. The arctic blast that will hit the United States next week is going to originate from there.
The air mass next week will be about as cold as it can get in this part of the country. Forecast models are showing temperature departures of up to 35 degrees below normal!
***The image below is not a forecast of -35°F temperatures. It is a forecast of how these temperatures will differ from normal January values***
The average high and low temperature in January for Youngstown is 34°F and 19°F, respectively. Temperatures 35 degrees below that would be around 0°F for a high and -15°F for a low temperature. That is dangerously cold air. Small-scale features such as cloud cover will determine how cold the temperature will get next week, but a sustained period of temperatures below 10°F is likely.
Additionally, wind gusts of up to 25-30 mph will be possible next week which will make the “feels-like” temperature plummet. The Storm Team 27 meteorology team will keep you updated on the arctic air outbreak forecast for next week.
