There are currently 35 criminals on Kent Police’s most wanted list – but none have been on the run for as long as 71-year-old Stephen Anderson.
The pensioner has been at large since officers sent out an appeal with his mugshot nine years ago.
He’s not the only one to have evaded capture for a long time – with a member of an armed gang and a suspected sex offender among those on the list for years.
Police chiefs say their most wanted appeals often result in criminals being brought to justice and a specialist team is tasked with reviewing cases where offenders have not yet been tracked down.
Anderson was added to the most wanted list in March 2016 after being charged with two counts of fraud by false representation in Herne Bay between 2013 and 2015.
He was due to appear at Margate Magistrates’ Court on May 18, 2016, but failed to appear and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Anderson, from St James Way, in Sidcup, has been on the police’s radar for longer than any other wanted person and efforts to locate him continue.
Kent Police often issues appeals about new additions, but the majority are found soon after they are announced and their photos are removed from the website.
But some, like Anderson, have been on there for years with no new details about their whereabouts emerging.
Reneo Shehu has been avoiding custody since he was found guilty of being part of an armed gang during a burglary in Edgar Road, Canterbury.
He and three others raided a cannabis factory before driving at police before they attempted to escape.
But Shehu failed to attend Canterbury Crown Court in December 2017 where he was sentenced in his absence to seven years behind bars. He remains on the most wanted list.
Meanwhile, Bestun Kadar, 32, of no fixed address has made it almost five-and-a-half years without being caught.
On March 7, 2018, he was charged with handling stolen goods, possession with intent to supply a Class B drug and possession of a weapon for the discharge of a noxious liquid.
He was due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on July 16, 2018 but failed to appear and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Police say officers from the Wanted Persons Bureau periodically carry out reviews into those at large to see if they can establish any new lines of enquiry – for example, those who may have fled the country.
But efforts to locate Anderson, Shehu and Kadar are ongoing.
Ch Insp Victoria Bushell from Kent Police’s Criminal Justice Unit explains: “Kent Police officers regularly carry out arrests of people wanted for a number of different offences and on occasion will request the public’s help in trying to locate them.
“We have a specialist unit, the Wanted Persons Bureau, who will focus on using all tools at our disposal to assist with lines of enquiry.
“This includes conducting research to locate suspects, tasking officers to arrest a wanted individual and issuing public appeals, when appropriate.”
Last year, 30 people were arrested as a result of a most wanted appeal from Kent Police.
Ch Insp Bushell added: “We are grateful to members of the public who step forward to assist our efforts in keeping our communities and streets safe. This reinforces our message that we will do all we can to arrest suspected offenders and bring those guilty of crimes to justice.”
Eight men have been added to the most wanted list this January alone.
The most recent addition is Charlie Moore who has links to Medway in Kent and Basildon in Essex.
Police released his photo on January 22 saying he is wanted for failing to comply with notification requirements.
Others on the list include Tony White who has links to Thanet and has been wanted on recall to prison for seven months.
He manipulated his girlfriend by threatening to “terrorise” her and repeatedly saying he would kill himself.
White, of Ramsgate, mentally and physically abused the young woman, before launching a campaign of harassment from inside his prison cell.
He also spat in her face, dragged her from a car and jumped on her windscreen, causing it to smash, showering her in glass.
The woman was driven to suicidal thoughts and left feeling like she was “constantly walking on eggshells”, while they were together, Canterbury Crown Court heard during the trial.
Malek Zafar is wanted in connection with a sexual offence in the Tonbridge area in 2018.
He has links to Tonbridge and Maidstone and has been on the run for almost five years.
All those on the current most wanted list are men.
Anyone with information about their whereabouts should call police on 999 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers in Kent anonymously on 0800 555111.
