RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– RCSD says a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old is accused of stealing a firearm from a vehicle on Wednesday morning.
Just after 5 a.m. on Feb. 19, deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Lake Avenue in reference to a car break-in.
The sheriff’s department says when deputies arrived to the scene, they met with the vehicle owner who reported that his car had been broken into and his firearm was stolen.
While deputies were processing the vehicle for evidence, they heard a gunshot nearby.
So deputies responded to the area and found a 17-year-old along with an 18-year-old identified as Sa’riya Green.
When approached the 17-year-old left the scene on foot.
Deputies say during the foot chase the 17-year-old was seen throwing a box in a garbage can.
Once the 17-year-old was caught, deputies returned to the garbage can to get the box.
Inside the box were three firearms; two of them which were reported as stolen, according to the sheriff’s dept.
One of the two stolen firearms was confirmed to be the gun stolen out of the victim’s vehicle at the apartment complex on Lake Avenue.
“I don’t know how many times it needs to be said, your vehicle is not your holster,” says Sheriff Lott.
Both Green and the 17-year-old were on court-ordered monitoring devices and let the devices die.
The 17-year-old is charged with simple larceny, breaking into a motor vehicle, three counts of unlawful possession of a handgun by person under 18, and tampering with electronic monitoring device.
The teen was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).
Again, we have a juvenile breaking into cars when they should be at home getting ready for school and a gun left in a vehicle. Our community members can help take guns out of the hands of juveniles by simply being responsible gun owners,” continues Lott.
Green is charged with tampering with electronic monitoring device and was taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
