Red Rocks cruise past Utah State in season opener

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – The fifth-ranked Utah gymnastics team kicked off its 50th anniversary season in style with a dominant victory over Utah State Friday night at the Huntsman Center.

Makenna Smith won the all-around, as the Utes began the season with a 196.775 to 194.450 victory over the Aggies.

Smith scored a 9.85 on the vault, a 9.875 on the bars, a 9.90 on the beam and capped her night with a 9.875 on the floor to win the all-around with a score of 39.500. Smith edged out Grace McCallum for the season-opening title.

Ashley Glynn turned in the best performance for the Utes on the vault with a 9.925. McCallum and Amelie Morgan both had scores of 9.90 on the bars to lead Utah, while Camie Winger had the top beam performance with a 9.95.

The Utes struggled a bit on the floor, with Smith recording the top score of 9.875.

Utah State sophomore Nyla Morabito was named the Utah State Gymnast of the Meet, finishing second on floor with 9.850 and tied for fifth on vault with 9.750.

Utah will next compete in a quad meet with defending champion LSU, Oklahoma and Cal on Saturday, January 11 in Oklahoma City. The meet will be televised on ABC4 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
