The Cincinnati Reds added to their pitching depth on Thursday, claiming right-hander Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Texas Rangers.Contreras, 25, has pitched parts of four seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Angels, logging a 4.35 ERA in 68.1 innings last season.At the conclusion of the 2024 season, Contreras was selected off waivers by the Rangers, who waived him again less than two months later.A native of the Dominican Republic, Contreras was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2016 and traded to the Pirates in 2021 as part of the club’s return for Jameson Taillon.Once with the Pirates organization, Contreras was listed on several top prospect lists around the league, with Baseball America and MLB.com listing him among the top 100 prospects in baseball ahead of the 2022 season.The right-hander impressed during his rookie 2022 season, pitching to a 3.79 ERA in 18 starts, though a steep drop-off in 2023 (6.59 ERA in 11 starts) forced Contreras out of Pittsburgh’s long-term plans.Contreras now joins a Cincinnati organization that continues to add pitching this offseason. In November, the club traded second baseman Jonathan India in exchange for starting pitcher Brady Singer. The club also re-signed right-hander Nick Martinez, who accepted the qualifying offer to return to the Reds in 2025.
