LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – 57 years ago an American activist who put his life on the line to bring equality and justice to all during the Civil Rights movement died, but those who honor the reformation Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. created continue to remember his name.

At Saint Mark Baptist Church, there’s an annual celebration in tribute to all he’s done, and it’s all organized by pastor Phillip L. Pointer Sr.

“We’re excited to host it again and it’s such a major part of our year to remember the life and the legacy of reverend Dr. Martin Luther King,” Pointer said.

From musical selections by a choir, to special words by people like Dr. Jermall Wright remembering Dr. King’s purpose.

“His words remind us that our fight for civil rights is not just about laws and policy, but about the dignity and humanity of every person” Wright said.

The service commemorates all the years of advocacy, Dr. King put in, teaching nonviolent ways to bring freedom to all who wanted more than a life of division.

“His message is that America owes all of its citizens the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and it’s that legacy that we honor” Pointer said.

Little Rock is one of many places to see the impact of Dr. Kings work, and to Mayor Frank Scott Jr., the best is yet to come.

“There’s always more room for improvement and more ways to go but when you have events like this, and you know that you can truly bring people together that’s what it’s all about” Scott said.
