People are being asked to help design a new adventure golf course which will honour an island’s history.

Plans for a complete revamp of Sheppey Leisure Complex at Beachfields in Sheerness were given the green light earlier this month.

The £20 million revival project means the centre is set to have a two-storey extension, a new cafe and an upgraded gym, as well as an adventure golf course outside.

There will also be an expanded GP facility on the ground floor of the revamped Healthy Living Centre, which sits next to the complex.

The mini golf course will include 15 holes which will each be themed around something to do with Sheppey.

Swale Council is asking those who live on the island to suggest landmarks and ideas to feature in the design of each hole. Suggestions can be made here.

Sessions will also be taking place at several schools across Sheerness where children will get the chance to help design and name the course.

Planning documents say the golf course will be open 10am to 4pm from November to March, and 10am to 8pm from April to October.

An artist’s impression of what it could look like has been released by the council, showing a scaled-down replica of the SS Montgomery shipwreck and a hole inspired by the Kingsferry Bridge.

Cllr Monique Bonney, chair of the economy and property committee, said: “The adventure golf will be a great place for friends and families to meet and have fun outdoors, yet this is only a small part of our wider Sheerness Revival project.

“Beachfields Park has been a leisure destination for more than 100 years – the beach, aquarena pool, and funfair drawing thousands to Sheerness over the years.

“This new adventure golf course will add another chapter in that storied history.

“Our ambitious project is also aiming to improve education, employability, health and leisure on the island through the improvement of our infrastructure.

“We are increasing the size of Sheppey College, the GP practice and making other important improvements to Masters House and the leisure complex.

“We can’t wait to get shovels in the ground and see these plans, which we have worked so hard on, realised, we know they will have a massive positive impact on the lives of the residents of Sheppey.

“Please get involved in this project by helping us design and name the new adventure golf which will be coming soon to Sheerness.

“We want to hear any of your local knowledge and memories of Beachfields and what makes the Isle of Sheppey so special.”
