SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A stolen loaded gun and suspected fentanyl pills were recovered by the Salt Lake City Police Department last week after officers safely arrested a 44-year-old man on parole.
The arrest happened during a traffic stop near 700 South and 300 West on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 30. During their investigation, SLCPD detectives say they found pills likely to be fentanyl, marijuana, and two loaded handguns – one of which was reported stolen out of Lehi.
Police said the suspect, identified as Craig Greene, 44, was restricted from possessing guns as a parolee. Greene was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on firearm and drug-related charges.
The Salt Lake City Police Department said detectives requested a no-bail hold, saying they were concerned Greene was a potential flight risk. Court records show that the request was approved, and Greene has been ordered to be held without bail pending a pretrial hearing.
This is the latest announced arrest by the Salt Lake City Police Department as the department continues to enforce a Public Safety Plan enacted by the city. In the first update of the plan, Salt Lake City announced its police department had made 460 jail bookings, 337 citations, seized 42 guns, and issued 82 illegal camping citations between Jan. 12 and Feb. 1.
“We clearly identified actions to improve public safety, and we’re taking them,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall in the city’s update. “I’m grateful to our officers and social workers who are helping enhance public safety at high-need areas around the Jordan River Trail, Ballpark neighborhood, and downtown core to ensure they’re safe and welcoming to all.”
Since the start of the new year, SLCPD reported it has conducted two successful two-day operations – one on the Jordan River Trail and another near the Main City Library. SLCPD said its “aggressive approach” is using crime data to find focus areas and balancing social outreach with disrupting criminal activity.
Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
