Snow closes I-5 north of Redding; chains required on most mountain roads

Winter weather has closed Interstate 5 north of Redding.

The California Department of Transportation said Thursday afternoon northbound lanes are closed at the Fawndale exit and motorists are being advised to use alternative routes.

In addition, chains or snow tires are required on I-5, 3 miles south of Dunsmuir and in Weed in Siskiyou County.

Chains controls are required on Highway 299 about six miles west of Redding in Shasta County and east at Montgomery Creek, 3 miles north of Round Mountain.

Trucks, including those pulling trailers are also being screened for chains on Highway 299E at Old Oregon Trail in Redding.

On Highway 44 east of Redding, chains are required about 10 miles west of Shingletown.

Thursday’s storm has brought lower snow levels than the storm that came in earlier this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for portions of Shasta County through 4 a.m. Friday. Heavy snow is expected above 3,000 feet with winds gusting up to 45 mph at times.

In Siskiyou County, winter storm warning is in effect through 10 a.m. Friday. Snow levels in areas around Mount Shasta are expected to be as low as 500 feet by Thursday night and into Friday morning.
