MONTANA – Snowfall is affecting road conditions throughout Montana, with the exception of the northern part of the state. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) reports that roads from Shelby to Plentywood are mostly dry to normal. However, central Montana roads are covered in snow, ice, and frost.
Specific areas experiencing these conditions include Junction US 12 East Townsend to Junction Secondary 284, Junction Montana 236 north of Hilger to Junction 19 south, and seven miles east of Junction Secondary 438 north to one mile west of Junction Secondary 251.
MDT has also reported some road closures and severe driving conditions. North Highway 91 is closed to through traffic from three miles north of Glen to Melrose due to a bridge repair at the Big Hole River structure, spanning mile marker 2.3 to 37.3. Additionally, a side road near Judith Gap is closed because of downed power lines, and East River Road South 540 is closed to through traffic due to a rock slide at mile marker 4. Local traffic only is permitted on these routes.
Severe driving conditions are present 11 miles north of Junction US 91 to Bozeman and Junction US 81 Willsall.
MDT is urging drivers to exercise caution and stay informed about current road conditions by checking the MDT 511 map. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for travel, check their tires, and ensure all snow is cleared from their cars, including the hood, roof, trunk, and mirrors. Icy roads and bridges, especially in shaded areas, are expected. Drivers should avoid using cruise control, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and slow down in areas with poor visibility.
