As ice begins to melt across Southeast Louisiana, many parishes are dealing with strained water systems. Now that temperatures are above freezing, residents no longer need to trickle their faucets. Residents in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, Lafourche Parish, and St. Bernard Parish are being asked to conserve water.Many parishes have issued boil-water advisories. INFRAMARK, our water servicing agency, has been exploring alternative ways to get the water tested, including attempting to work with neighboring parish labs. However, LDH has confirmed that those labs are only certified to test their own water samples, meaning all testing for Plaquemines Parish must be conducted at the LDH testing center. We understand the frustration this may cause and are actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. On Thursday morning, parish officials urged residents to shut off all water use to allow the system to replenish.Parish officials say the system is overloaded, and water use has to stop for pressure to be restored.The boil-water advisory is effective immediately and will remain in effect until lifted.Grand Isle: A boil-water advisory is now in effect for portions of Grand Isle.The advisory was issued Wednesday afternoon by the Jefferson Parish Water Department. Residents on the Cheniere side of Grand Isle to Rosethorn Lane are under the advisory due to multiple broken water lines.Customers will need to boil their water until the advisory has been rescinded.Slidell:The Cross Gates water system experienced a brief drop in Chlorine residual on Thursday. Although Chlorine residuals were restored to LDH compliance, out of an abundance of caution the entire Cross Gates Water System is under a precautionary Boil Water Advisory.St. James Parish: St. James Parish issued a boil water advisory Wednesday for the unincorporated area of the Parish. This means both the East and West Bank of the Parish, excluding the Town of Lutcher and Town of Gramercy. This is in place until lifted by the state. An excessive use of water has led to a pressure loss. Because of this, the water produced by our water supply system will be of questionable microbiological quality.Therefore, as a precaution, the water system is issuing a boil advisory effective as of Wednesday, January 22nd. This boil advisory is to remain in effect until rescinded by the water system.St. John the Baptist Parish: At this time due to lower than normal water pressure, Reserve, Garyville, Mt. Airy, Edgard Wallace, and Pleasure Bend, are under a Boil Water Advisory until further notice. Please bring water to a rolling boil out of precaution for one minute.
