Sustained winds are expected to be around 30 mph and gusts nearing 50 mph starting Wednesday into Thursday, according to NWS. In addition, unusually dry winter weather may prompt Red Flag Warnings.

“Typically by December, we would have had a front or two that would have brought some rain to the leeward areas and so far haven’t really seen that this winter,” stated Tom Birchard, NWS Meteorologist. “We were anticipating that we’d be trending towards La Nina this winter. Now, it looks like the La Nina is going to be a little bit weaker than expected.”

High trade winds are also expected to bring light to moderate fast moving showers to Leeward areas statewide, said NWS.

However, it still would not be enough to significantly impact dry conditions.

A statement sent from Hawaiian Electric (HECO) said, “We are closely monitoring forecasts and info from the NWS. We will provide updates if conditions or forecasts change.”

If a Red Flag Warning is issued, NWS encourages the public to avoid outdoor burning or activities that might cause sparks. Those with holiday decorations outside should consider securing them in place, per NWS.

“Potentially cause some issues with people’s holiday decorations getting knocked over and stuff like that,” stated Birchard.
