NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WCMH) — A man is in custody after one person was shot dead and five others were injured after a shooting Tuesday night at a New Albany warehouse.
According to authorities, U.S. Marshals executed a search warrant and arrested Bruce Reginald Foster III in connection to a mass shooting that occurred at the KDC/One building in the 8800 block of Smith’s Mill Road North Tuesday night.
Foster was arrested in Columbus in the Weinland Park neighborhood, just south of the Ohio State campus, at around 10 a.m. Wednesday, nearly 12 hours after the shooting took place. He is facing a charge of aggravated murder out of Licking County Court of Common Pleas and a bond recommendation of $20 million is listed in a court document.
According to a report from the Associated Press, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Deville said Foster III was located in an apartment but did not initially cooperate.
“Normally what we prefer to do is have people come out and surrender to us,” Deville said. “He refused to come out. Our guys did have to make entry.”
The shooting appears to be a “targeted type of attack,” New Albany Police Chief Greg Jones said in an update just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. There were no reports or indication that an altercation or confrontation took place before the shooting, police said, and there is no known motive for the shooting at this time.
Jones added that a firearm was recovered at the scene; he did not say what type of firearm it was. For timeline coverage of Tuesday night’s shooting, view the video player above.
Jones said in a press conference at 7:30 a.m. that Foster did work at the KDC/One facility, that he had been in the building for several hours before the shooting, which occurred at around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday night. An unspecified handgun was used and authorities are reviewing security footage, which shows evidence of Foster entering and exiting the building.
Foster reportedly did not drive to the building, but rather got a ride. Police do not initially believe the person driving Foster is directly involved.
“This is a fluid situation, were only hours into this, a lot of this information can change,” Jones said, “But we don’t have any reason to believe that anybody was an accomplice by helping him get here or escape.”
Just before 4 a.m., New Albany police obtained an address with a possible connection to Foster on Morsetown Court South, near Westerville Road, in Columbus’ Walnut Creek neighborhood. An Ohio State Highway Patrol helicopter also spotted a vehicle that matched a basic description that Foster left in.
A Columbus police SWAT unit went to a residence with a search warrant “out of an abundance of caution” and made contact with multiple occupants within the unit, but it turned out the residents and vehicle are not believed to be connected to the shooting. Multiple other addresses have been checked since to no avail.
The conditions of the five transported to an area hospital are not known. The deceased victim was found inside the building, Jones said.
At least 20 people were escorted from one building at the scene to another at one point. Jones said those people — he estimated 150 people in the building at the time of the shooting — are safe and able to contact their friends and family.
Due to the size of the facility, Jones said many of the people inside the building did not know the shooting was happening. Jones said once those at the scene speak with detectives, they will be able to leave the location.
“This has been a very tragic situation,” Jones said. “This is something that we hope that would never happen in our community. But we prepare for it, and this is where we are now.”
Law enforcement officers with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, New Albany and Columbus police as well as the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene.
New Albany schools are open Wednesday and police stated that the KDC/One warehouse will remain closed for the foreseeable future while the investigation remains active. According to the New Albany Chamber of Commerce website, KDC/One manufactures cosmetics for LBrands stores.
