LIBERTY, Ohio (WKBN) — The suspect in an officer-involved shooting in Liberty on Monday has died.
The Mahoning County Coroner’s Officer was notified early Thursday evening that Jason Cain, 31, died.
Liberty Township police officers responded Monday afternoon to a notification from the Flock License Plate Reader system regarding a stolen vehicle entering the township.
The vehicle was found in the parking lot of the Belmont Plaza Shopping Center. Inside was a driver who police identified as Cain.
An autopsy of Cain was conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office. The incident remains under investigation by BCI and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.
Reports state officers positioned both marked and unmarked police units to block the vehicle in an effort to prevent a potential pursuit before ordering Cain out. However, Cain reportedly ignored the officers’ commands and instead began ramming the police vehicles, placing officers and bystanders in immediate danger, a news release from the police department stated.
In response to the escalating threat, one officer fired a gun, hitting Cain, who then accelerated the stolen vehicle and crashed through the front wall of the Harbor Freight building before coming to a stop.
Officers ordered a female passenger from the vehicle and transported her to the Liberty Police Department for questioning. Meanwhile, additional officers rendered aid to Cain, who was later transported by the Liberty Fire Department to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
As per standard protocol, one officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the incident.
