HUNTSVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — Huntsville crews have found the water leak that has plagued the city’s water supply over the last week.

Mayor Richard Sorensen posted the update with a photo of the leak on social media, officially announcing, “The leak has been found.”

The water leak has been a thorn in the side for Huntsville since Dec. 9, when city officials discovered the city’s water supply was declining faster than they could fill it. By Dec. 12, city officials said the storage tank was down to 10% – a 5% drop from just 24 hours earlier.

Throughout the week, Hunstville worked in coordination with Eden and Weber County to provide drinking water for Hunstville residents impacted by the sudden loss of water. In addition, a local LDS stake center was made available to hand out bottled water and provide a place to use the restroom and shower.

By Dec. 15, the city had established a temporary water line, providing residents with water approved for use outside of drinking and cooking. Those who needed the water for drinking or cooking were advised to boil the water first.

Meanwhile, water crews worked to identify the leak reporting that they found several small leaks but nothing significant enough to explain the sudden drop in water levels. Using pressure testing and exploratory digging, among other methods, crews were able to eliminate several potential sources before finally finding the source of the leak on Tuesday morning, just over a week after the leak was noticed.

Mayor Sorensen previously said the leak can be repaired within hours after it was found but it could still be a few days before water usage in the city returns to normal.

“Getting the water treatment plant back online and complying with state water safety requirements will take a few days. More details on this in coming days,” said Sorensen. “Thanks for your patience during this unprecedented crisis, and thanks for watching out for your neighbors.”
