SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Skiers and snowboarders might be lamenting the lack of storms and snow this winter, but some Utah agencies are taking advantage of the warmer weather.

The Utah Department of Transportation is one such agency, using the warmer weather and lack of valley snow to complete some maintenance on Utah’s roads. In just one night, UDOT crews filled 78 potholes while others cleared drains and repaired highway signs.

“It’s kind of a crazy year, with much less snow than usual, but it can change on a dime here,” said UDOT Director of Maintenance Shawn Lambert. “No matter what the weather is, we’re always out here working. There are still plenty of activities to take care of.”

The pothole work was done over the weekend on I-80 and I-15. Later this week, weather permitting, the Salt Lake Metro crews plan to fill even more potholes in the “Spaghetti Bowl,” where I-15, I-80, and SR-201 come together.

Meanwhile, the Grantsville maintenance shed crew has been crack-sealing the pavement on Sr-196 near Dugway Proving Ground. Shane Lazenby, UDOT’s Grantsville shed supervisor said the cooler weather has been a welcomed change from the summer heat this work is usually done in.

“It’s a lot easier on us to be out here working in the cool weather than in the summer heat,” said Lazenby.

Other UDOT maintenance sheds across the state have been doing other work on Utah’s highways, including sweeping, litter removal, sign maintenance, repairs, and rock and graffiti removal, among others.

Bob Giolas, UDOT’s Salt Lake Metro shed supervisor, said that the department is just doing whatever needs to be done while the crews aren’t plowing snow.
