According to NBC, Ramaswamy will instead now fully focus his efforts on a previously reported campaign to become the next governor of Ohio.An official announcement by Ramaswamy is expected next week, according to two anonymous sources familiar with the situation.Ramaswamy was previously selected by Trump to lead the department, abbreviated as DOGE, alongside billionaire Elon Musk.“It became increasingly clear over last week that pursuing the governor’s race and running DOGE was not compatible. He’s leaving on good terms with Trump, Elon and the team,” NBC News quotes one of the sources as saying.Ohio will vote for its next governor in 2026 to succeed term-limited Republican Governor Mike DeWine.NBC News also reports despite Ramaswamy’s close ties to President Trump, other Ohio Republicans don’t seem to be dissuaded from considering their own gubernatorial bids.Two other state officials — state Attorney General Dave Yost and state Treasurer Robert Sprague — are also strongly considering runs.However, Ramaswamy already appears to have ruffled feathers in the short time he has been reported to be a gubernatorial candidate. According to one of NBC’s two sources, Ramaswamy left a negative impression on some present with how he handled his appearance at the Ohio Republican Party inaugural ball in Washington, D.C. on Sunday night.“He can’t bother to spend more than 45 minutes with 1,400 of the most influential Republicans in Ohio,” NBC quotes the unnamed Ohio GOP leader as saying. “It’s next-level arrogance.”On the Democratic side, Dr. Amy Acton, former director of the Ohio Department of Health, so far remains the only candidate to declare her candidacy for governor.Ramaswamy is a Cincinnati native, having graduated from St. Xavier High School in 2003. After graduation, he then went on to attend Harvard and Yale Law School, where Ramaswamy was a classmate of now Vice President-elect JD Vance.In his career, Ramaswamy made millions as a hedge fund manager, before going on to write the book Woke, Inc., a 2021 book that quickly became popular in conservative circles upon its release. He then would go on to use his fame from the book to run for president in the Republican primary in 2024, where he gained a reputation on the debate stage and the campaign trail as one of President Trump’s biggest defenders.Ramaswamy’s departure would leave Elon Musk solely in charge of the department, if Donald Trump does not proceed to name a successor to take Ramaswamy’s place.DOGE, first pitched as an idea by Musk, is intended to cut back on government spending waste.
