Winter storm watch issued in Massachusetts, up to 8 inches of snow expected in some areas

A winter storm watch has been issued in Massachusetts ahead of a significant winter storm expected to make for a messy Sunday night before some of the coldest air of the season moves in.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for parts of Western Franklin, Eastern Franklin, Northern Worcester, Western Hampshire, Western Hampden, Eastern Hampshire, Eastern Hampden, Southern Worcester, Northwest Middlesex, Central Middlesex, Western Essex, and Southeast Middlesex counties through 7 a.m. Monday.

Temperatures will warm up on Saturday and rain will swing during the late afternoon and evening. Skies are expected to clear out by Saturday night.

Sunday afternoon is when the snow will begin.

Plowable snow is expected to arrive late Sunday afternoon and evening and begin to stick in the late night hours.

In an updated snow map released Saturday morning, the Boston 25 team said most of southern New England could see 3-6 inches of snow. The Cape and Islands will see lighter accumulations, with 1-3 inches possible.

Some areas in New Hampshire and Northern Mass. may see 6-8 inches of snow.

The Weather team noted that there’s always the possibility of slight shifts in the storm track, which will change snow totals and the areas that get hit hardest as Sunday approaches.

A bitter blast of frigid air will take hold when the snow clears, with highs on Tuesday and Wednesday struggling to reach the teens.
