(WJW) – Early Thursday it was announced that President Joe Biden would make the largest act of clemency in modern history, including commuting the sentences of roughly 1,500 people and pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes.

Among those the commutations announced are Former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora. Dimora was convicted in one of the largest corruption scandals in Ohio history.
Back in 2008, dozens of FBI raided Dimoras home in Independence. Federal prosecutors said Dimora took more than $166,000 in bribes in cash, home improvements, services from prostitutes and trips to Las Vegas.
Dimora was found guilty of 33 counts, including of racketeering, bribery, conspiracy, Hobbs Act conspiracy and tax charges on May 9, 2012.

He was originally sentenced to 28 years behind bars, but later re-sentenced to 23 years. After spending nearly 12 years behind bars, Dimora was released from a federal prison to home confinement. He was released under the CARES Act, which was created during the pandemic. Dimora’s lawyers had tried to get him released during the height of the pandemic because of his health, but a federal judge denied his request.
The Associated Press reported that commutations announced Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, 1 in 5 prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press.
