The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a deadly crash in Treme Saturday morning. Police say the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on the Interstate 10 on-ramp near North Claiborne Avenue and St. Philip Street. Investigators determined that two cars were allegedly racing each other on North Claiborne Avenue headed Eastbound when one of the cars failed to negotiate a turn near St. Phillip Street. According to police, the driver missed the turn and the car hit a guardrail, causing it to overturn and land on a tree. Two people were in the car, a 23-year-old Hispanic woman was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries. The second victim was a 24-year-old Black man, who was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS. NOPD says the second car was not involved in the crash and there were no injuries reported by the occupants. The Orleans Parish coroner will determine the exact cause of death and identify the victim after family notification.
