The fires that are spread throughout California have caused insane amounts of damage to everything they’ve touched: homes, businesses, people themselves, and animals everywhere. People are scrambling to save everything they can.
One animal rescue is braving the blazes to try and help any animals they possibly can. Their efforts have not been in vain: they’ve rescued two ponies who were trapped among the flames of the Palisades fire, and there are more to come:
In Defense of Animals (IDA) is saving so many lives, and it’s just so heartwarming to see. Without them, who knows what would’ve happened to these ponies and dozens of others!

The two ponies in this video were rescued from Philozoia Animal Rescue in Santa Monica, California, which was directly in the path of the Palisades fire. They reached out to In Defense of Animals to help evacuate the two ponies who lived on their property, and they got there as quickly as they could, rescuing the pair just in time.
According to Sammy Zablen, a board member at IDA, the drive took over 3 hours even though it would only take about 20 minutes on a regular day. These are the conditions Zablen and other first responders from IDA had to drive through to reach those ponies:

Philozoia mainly takes in dogs, and earlier that day, they’d managed to evacuate 38 pups and a pig. Unfortunately, two dogs are still unaccounted for, and Philozoia’s rescue center is completely gone. If you want and are able to help, the rescue is currently trying to find emergency foster placements for many of the evacuated pups, and they’ve started a GoFundMe to help with the costs of rebuilding.
How to Help Animals Impacted By California Fires
In Defense of Animals is on the ground helping every animal they can, but they can’t catch everything themselves. They rely heavily on reports from people in impacted areas, whether they’re concerning wildlife or domestic animals.
If you see something, say something. If you’re willing and able, you can:
-
Contact Sammy Zablen of IDA directly at 310-869-2383 to report wild or domestic animals in need.
-
Donate to Philozoia’s rebuilding GoFundMe.
-
Donate to IDA directly to help provide food, supplies, and expenses associated with their rescue efforts.
Rescue efforts are best left to professionals in these conditions: if you see an animal in need, you should report it immediately, but don’t put yourself in danger to rescue them on your own. Rescues all over California are about to be inundated with pets in need of temporary housing: if possible, you can apply to foster through a local rescue or even just make donations. Anything helps!
