Ghost hunter hopes to transform vandalism-hit Tudor House in Margate into paranormal investigation site

A ghost hunter hopes to transform one of a town’s oldest buildings which he says is a prime supernatural site.

Sean Brady wants to introduce a paranormal investigation site but concedes searching for spirits is not “everybody’s cup of tea”.

He is trying to convince council officers to get Grade II*-listed Tudor House in Margate back “up and running” after vandalism left it in a sorry state.

Mr Brady, who runs the Thanet Paranormal Association, says his colleagues believe it has the most ghost activity out of any other location in Kent.

But the 33-year-old is not just set on holding investigations in the early 16th century building.

He also envisages hosting other activities, including murder mysteries, school visits and gardening events.

Tudor House closed two years ago after falling victim to vandalism.

It is part of TDC’s ongoing Museums Review, which includes Tudor House, Dickens House Museum in Broadstairs, the Old Town Hall and Margate Museum, in Margate and the Maritime Museum in Ramsgate.

Mr Brady, who lives up the road from the King Street site, is keen to see the building reopen but TDC says it is not “actively seeking a tenant” at this point.

“A couple of my team members mentioned the most activity they have is in Tudor House,” the vape shop worker said.

“After it was vandalised, it has been in a sorry state for the past year and a half.

“I kept trying to get hold of the council as I want to take it on myself to hold events there to get it up and running again.

“I did meet with the TDC museum officer who said it is not safe for people to go in at the moment which is fair enough but he said when the repairs are complete he’ll see what can be done.”

Mr Brady says money is not the driving force behind his plan – adding he will reinvest the cash into repairs.

He argues hosting paranormal activities will “not tarnish the building in any way” or disrupt those living nearby.

“When we do investigations, it is done most respectfully,” he added.

“All the investigations are very mindful of neighbours, there is never any need for loud noise and we ensure anyone who comes along is respectful.

“The last thing we need is people coming along who are loud and obnoxious.

“I keep my group small and I build a special level of trust before I even contemplate them coming out with me.”

Mr Brady has been attending paranormal investigations for about 20 years.

“It all started when I was a teenager as I come from a family of pagans,” he said.

“We started doing spiritual activity in our Ramsgate house and the activity was phenomenal.”

A spokesperson for TDC said: “Condition surveys were carried out on the council’s museums, as part of the asset management strategy. These informed the level of investment needed to carry out essential repairs and maintenance at each site.

“The Grade II*-listed Tudor House in Margate requires ongoing maintenance and also work to put right damage caused by vandalism. A specialist contractor is needed, due to the nature of the building.

“We are currently obtaining estimates for the work, which includes repairing the external staircase and a side wall. Work is expected to start in the spring when weather conditions are more suitable for the specialist materials involved.

“Tudor House is currently closed, and is part of the council’s ongoing Museums Review.

“The museum collection has been audited, and arrangements made to ensure that all the artefacts held are properly preserved.

“As custodians on behalf of the residents in Thanet, and as the owner of the building and collections, we have a duty to do so. We are not actively seeking a tenant.”
