HONOLULU (KHON2) — The annual Punahou Carnival has returned to Oʻahu, welcoming community members to enjoy the fun and games under some perfect weather conditions. The festivities are Feb. 7 and Feb. 8. from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The junior class at Punahou puts on the carnival every year as one of their kuleana, or their responsibilities.

Miranda Yap, a Punahou student who is part of the publicity committee, said that this event takes a whole year to plan.

“The junior class actually starts [planning] the day after the carnival ends, to start to plan the next year’s carnival,” Yap said. “So, there is a lot of time and effort and thought that is put into all of this.”

For sophomores, the anticipating knowing that they are next-in-line to spearhead the carnival is exciting. Yap recalled the excitement of feeling the carnival on her shoulders one year ago.

“I saw my upperclassmen friends having a lot of fun doing their carnival responsibilities. So, I was super psyched to step into this role,” she said.

Punahou Carnival has seen as many as 40,000 attendees in the past years. Yap says the highlight that keeps people coming to the carnival are the malasadas, among other things.

“You can’t miss the Punahou Carnival malasadas. Those are a personal favorite,” she said. “We also have a ton of rides and games, some EK Fernandez thrill rides are back. We have Seven Seas and Zero Gravity. And, of course, we have some other favorites such as Art Gallery and White Elephant.”

For parking, there are street stalls available but they fill up fast. Local community landmarks such as churches and schools have some parking available as well.

The rides and malasadas aren’t the best part for juniors like Yap, however. The best part is knowing that they are proudly representing their school and the Class of 2026 while helping fellow students.

“It is such a sense of pride to be able to represent my school and my class,” Yap said. “Punahou Carnival is such an important event for our community because all of our proceeds go to our financial aid program, so to be able to take on this responsibility is honestly a huge honor and it feels great.”
